Vintage C. Baker Microscope with Mechanical Stage & Watson Lens, Cased c1950
Here we have a really good example of a vintage C. Baker monocular microscope in brass/steel with black painted finish and chromed details. This example is serial number 37910 and it dates from around the early 1950s. The condition is really good and suggests relatively few owners and only light use over the last 60-odd years. Turning to the main technical details of this quality vintage microscope, we have.

Monocular eyepiece unit with three progressive magnification eyepieces: 6x (Watson), 7x (Un-named) and 10x C. Main focus is by rack and pinion which has a smooth action through the twin chromed thumb-wheels - travel and focus remain good. Fine focus is via vernier adjustment which also appears to have a nice smooth action.

There are four objective lenses in total all by C. Baker and all with their own period storage canisters.

Together the set of lenses provide a usable selection of progressive magnifications on a rotating 3-way turret: C. Baker Low-power objective - 2.5x (replacing Vickers 4x objective shown in most of the listing photos) C. Baker 2/3rd inch - 10x C. Baker 1/6th inch - 40x C. Baker 1/12th inch - 100x (oil immersion) - untested (effective magnification therefore ranges from around 15x to 1,000x) The C.

Baker 2.5x low-power objective is now shown in the final listing photo. The fully mechanical stage is superb, it's an in-house Baker design with twin thumb-wheel x-axis and y-axis controls, plus an adjustable slide holder mechanism that's a joy to use and perfect for holding slides in place during active viewing sessions. The condenser is an Abbe-type by CTS on a rack and pinion height adjustable mount with an interesting manual raise/lower and swing-out function for easy maintenance or replacement.

The condenser has right-sided thumb-wheel control. It also has a fully working iris and a swing-out filter holder for coloured or dark-field filters. Illumination is via a multi-adjustable plano-concave mirror with good silvering to both sides. The overall condition of this microscope is excellent and there is only very minor chipping/wear to the black paint finish in areas where one would expect to see some signs of use for a vintage piece. The microscope also tilts (with a little effort) and stays in position as required.

There is the benefit of an original wooden storage case with this microscope. The case is fitted to accommodate the microscope quite snugly and also features two removable storage racks for its range of lenses. The case is in pretty sound condition for its age and also benefits from an original working lock and key. In summary, this is a superb vintage C.

Baker microscope and may well appeal to collectors. It's supplied with a comprehensive range of objective lenses and superb mechanical stage which is a must for high-magnification applications - anything over about 300x essentially needs the fine degree of control available with a quality mechanical stage for moving the specimen/slide around during viewing. This is a heavy microscope, so owing to its weight it will be dispatched by insured courier upon receipt of cleared funds.
