STUART'S MARINE DISTANCE METER CIRCA 1910. This complete cased instrument was made by H Hughes & Son Ltd of London in the early part of the 20. PATT 498 and serial No 10225. This item comes with the original typed instructions and transit case (good condition). The case measures 7 ¾ by 4 ½ inches and the instrument itself 5 by 3 inches approx.
The panels (front and back) seem to have shrunk over the years and has caused cracking where they are screwed to the case. I have seen a number of these instruments, and they all suffer from the same problem. Maybe the early materials were not shrink-tested. Distance Meter provides a means of measuring the range of an object of known height at ranges between one quarter of a cable and up to 30 cables.
This instrument was also used by the Royal Navy in WWII where the Ops Officer could look up the height of a known enemy warship, and then calculate its distance in cables; ideal for torpedo attacks. Please refer to the enclosed instructions for method of operation. This item is in the category "Antiques\Marine/Maritime". The seller is "canis_est" and is located in this country: GB.
