Rare Antique Dollond London Brass Wenham Microscope with Lenses in Display Box
Fine example of a high quality microscope complete with two objective lenses and an eyepiece lens, dating from the mid 19th Century. The microscope parts are made entirely of brass and it sits on a brass base. It has an extendable eyepiece tube with rack and pinion coarse focus knobs on the rear of the tube and an additional fine focus knob to the front. It has a square adjustable stage which also rotates and has a slide holder. Below the staging is a large adjustable mirror to focus the light and a pinhole wheel. The design of the microscope is near identical to the Jackson Model microscope designed by Wenham for Watson & Sons, however this microscope is not a binocular. The rear of the base is signed'Dollond London' but also has a W engraved below - perhaps for Wenham or Watson and Dollond were the retailers. I can find no record of Dollond having produced microscopes like this. The microscope comes with two brass objective lenses in brass lens holders marked 1in and 1/8. It also comes with a large brass eyepiece lens. The microscope appears to be in good working order and I have set it up and tested it with a few old slides. It was easy to focus and produced a clear and crisp image. The microscope does not come with its original box but instead comes with a glass display cabinet that I believe has been adapted to show off the microscope. There is a rack for holding the lenses and the base has been lined in velvet with indentations made to hold the feet of the microscope in place. The box is good quality and made of mahogany with bevelled glass in the front and sided.
There is a piece of moulding missing from the top and a repair at the back where a piece of wood has been replaced but overall it displays very nicely and the microscope looks good in it. If you do not want the display box please let me know and I can post just the microscope.
The microscope measures approximately 15 (38cm) tall when set up. The box is 16" high by 11" wide and 11 deep. Overall it is in good condition but it has been used and will have normal signs of wear and slight tarnishing. There are some small marks and minor scratches on the base but nothing detrimental and very little wear to the original lacquer. All the parts move smoothly and t.
He brass has been cleaned and lightly polished and it displays very nicely. The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions at all please ask.
