RARE ANTIQUE CROOKS RAILWAY CATHODE RAY TUBE / X RAY TUBE 1900/1920 F28b
On offer here is this antique Crooks railway cathode ray tube / X-ray tube Ion gas Circa 1900. There is a wonderful website called the cathode ray tube site (CRTSite dot com) which gave me this information which can also tell you all about this piece. (If you like this sort of thing I would recommend having a look at the site it is very interesting and informative).
On this website it told me this is a Crooks Railway tube. This particular experiment was devised to show that the rays would Bounce off of the paddles and move the wheel up and down the glass rails.
The last picture (picture 12) Its taken from the above-mentioned website and shows the tube electrified. I have been lucky recently to make a new contact in the Czech Republic who clears schools and colleges both in Czechoslovakia and east Germany and he has found recently this wonderful collection of old x-ray and cathode ray experiments this fantastic example was with them.
Displayed on a wooden base, I think the base is later than the tube. Whether you intend to electrify it or not it is a very decorative item with a sculptural quality and the wheel still moves beautifully up and down the glass rails a little bit like a desk toy. The experiment is to introduce an electrical current which charges Ion gas particles inside the vacuum where it is thought that the electrons strike the paddles of the wheel to move it along, it was an experiment to prove the movement of electrons within the vacuum.
All of this can be explained on the website mentioned above. These old TUBES are collectable and can command high prices by collectors, I've picked this up quite a reasonable price so I'm not being greedy....The glass does come out of the stand.
