Scarce piece of equipment used to experiment with or demonstrate the effects of gravity. String winds/unwinds round a cast iron'screw' with a wooden top; the other end is attached to a metal pan where weights would be placed. Made by Philip Harris of Birmingham around the 1930s. Wooden base is 61 x 20 cm; post is 46 cm and screw 34 cm tall, including base.
Marks and wear to wood as would be expected for age. Pan is rusted and sides are flattened out of shape in a couple of places, with the top also folded over on one (see photos).
