A wonderful set of 1930's precision working scales by Philip Harris of Birmingham, England. These apothecary scales, which can be used to weigh a range of liquids and powders. A finely and accurately tuned pan balance design, consisting of a solid wooden base with adjustable feet, a brass stem and two brass and glass pans.
Complete with an original plumb bob to ensure the base is level. There is a long needle that deflects across a small scale at the base of the stem indicating how well the two pans are balanced. When not in use, a lever on the base lowers the balance arms down onto two fixed cradles, stopping them from moving. Full set of boxed original weights consisting of., 10,5,2(2), 1 gram and a range of 9 weights of 500mg and below. All set in a varnished wooden beech case with a section glass cover and fine tweezers.
This box was the original set and is complete which is pretty remarkable given its age. The box is 16 cm by 7.5 cm by 3.5 cm. There is an additional box of weights, again 500mg and below. Originally 10 weights but 3 are missing. All set in wax finished mahogany case with tweezers.
The box is 10 cm by 4 cm by 2.5 cm. This set of scales comes with a wonderful patina, displaying the blemishes of time and is a credit to the design and manufacturing skills of Philip Harris.It comes with a carriage case. In short this will make an excellent gift for serious collectors, or those looking for quaint vintage home decor.
Complete scales of the era complete with a full set of weights are rare. This item originates from one of a number of family houses in Bath. It has been generously donated by the owners to sell and raise funds for Genesis Trust.Thank you all for viewing this listing.
