This impressive mid 19th century Mariners small boat compass is gimbal mounted in its original jointed oak box, but has a later added sliding lid, and measures 6" square by 4¾" deep, with a compass bowl diameter of 4. The traditional floating dry card dial pivots on a gemstone bearing with a distinctive fleur de lis denoting North, and interestingly a subtle logo around the East cardinal point, which may be an indication of a particular maker as this is unsigned.
In good condition all round, the dial is clean with a clear glass crystal and the brass bowl retains virtually all its original lacquer, although there is a minor hairline split in one area which does not affect the function and is only visible with the bowl upturned, see photo. A substantial instrument weighing just over 1.2kg, not only in good working order, but also a nice decorative antique which displays very well. Please study the photos as they are part of the description, and I will be happy to answer any questions if I can. Please check out my other auctions for more interesting items.
