A magnificent example of a J. SWIFT & Son of London Lacquered Brass Bacteriological Model Microscope.
The Microscope comes in its original top quality Fitted case with Late Victorian gothic solid lacquered brass heavy duty Swift carry handle. The Microscope its accessories & Case are in outstanding condition.The Microscope has rack and pinion course focus with fine control from the body limb brass thumb screw with the course control knobs having fine condition blued steel screws. The rack is in A1 condition with clean and precise focusing. The Eyepiece tube has a graduated engraved extension tube. There is a triple rotating solid nickel silvered brass objective nosepiece holder.
The Microscope comes with 3 Fine lacquered brass engraved objectives in their original 2 part lacquered brass canisters. A 2/3rd Inch, b 1/6th Inch-PA. 83 NA, c 1/12th Inch Oil Immersion.
[NB: All canisters are engraved to the lid and base, showing that they are the original matched canisters]. There is also a rare and fine example of a 25 mm TANK Objective with 1 mm depth in original matched lacquered brass canister [serial no: 49951]. There are two original eyepieces : No: 3 & No: 4.
The solid brass stage has a working SWIFT Patent Mechanical X-Y axis stage fitted and an engraved Maltby Micrometer. The substage has a lacquered brass focusing condenser with swing out filter holder and continually variable working Iris Diaphragm. The focusing mechanism has nickel silvered solid brass fittings. The mirror is in fine condition with double sided rotating faces [Plane or Concave].The limb is of solid black lacquer finished brass. This fine microscope has been in a private collection for many years and has the original owners name to the Case. Who wrote a number of articles for "Nature " etc. Also the body limb is engraved with his name and also every objective & eyepiece is engraved with his initials. Most probably when the order was placed with J.
The case hinges, clasps and key are all fine and working. The base of the case has four brass studs fitted to keep the case off any surface. This is the most magnificent example I have ever seen of this model in over 50 years. Case Dimensions = 30 x 20 15 cms.
