For sale is an unusually large and early induction coil weighing in at around 55 lbs (25 kilos). The dimensions of the mahogany base are approximately 74 cm (29 inches) wide by 38 cm (15 inches) deep. Height is also 38 cm (15 inches) excluding the brass terminals.
I would date it around 1870 as the interrupter is mounted separately on the base and not at the end of the main coil as is usual on later models. The base also has a commutator mounted on it to switch on the battery and for reversing direction of the input voltage.
I do not know what it's original purpose was, but it could well have been made for demonstration purposes. Exterior condition is good as can be seen from the photos, with much of the original lacquer still present on the brass fittings. I have not been able to test it with a battery (probably needs a large 6 volt battery), but connecting a test meter to both the low and high voltage coils shows they both have continuity. Please ask if you have any questions or need more photos. The item "Massive Antique Induction Coil circa 1870" is in sale since Monday, September 21, 2020.
