The barometer has been tested and found accurate to 0.2 mbar and has been certified as accurate between 870 and 1050 mbar. Essentially this barometer is made from brass with a steel cistern.
It is equipped with a thermometer calibrated 260 - 320 degrees absolute, it is also fitted with a rack-and-pinion operated vernier for accurately reading the height of the mercury meniscus. Being a marine barometer it is designed to be used in the upright position via gimbals and a heavy duty wall mounting bracket. The main barometer has a large bore but will also have a restriction in it to prevent the mercury from "slopping" and acting as a damper.
The original fitted wooden case is in good condition, with 3 clasps and a lock, but, (as usual), no key. Overall height of case: 40 inches. Condition: excellent, all moving parts work well and there are no cracks or chips to the glass part.
