This Victorian brass cased aneroid barometer is signed'F. Darton & Co, LONDON, Compensated, ? 744', a respected instrument maker who started manufacturing in 1834, with the company continuing well into the 20th century. A combined barometer and altimeter to 7000 feet, a broad arrow is inscribed on the brass underside, the leather case is also debossed with the lettering'JABEZ CLIFF & CO. 1917' indicating this barometer was military issued during WWI.
In good condition all round, the dent free case still retains much of its original lacquer and the aluminium dial is clean with clear lettering, the leather carry case is also in good condition with all the stitching intact. In good working order, (it passes the plastic bag test) the barometer measures 115mm in diameter and 50mm deep. A substantial high quality instrument, it has a bevelled glass crystal, a needle trend marker attached to a rotating brass bezel and weighs in at 1170 grams with its case and just under 1kg without.
