This brass clinometer by E R Watts was built in 1940 and would have been used to align heavy artillery to the required elevation angle during World War II. 1940', the maker was founded in 1856 by Edwin Watts, initially as a maker of marine compasses, but grew significantly in the early 20th century in response to the demand for accurate instruments during both World Wars. It's primarily constructed of a black finished, brass frame, holding a rotating brass cylinder, which elevates the spirit level within the frame, and is stored in a triangular mahogany box with some green felt padding to ensure little movement when carried. The clinometer itself is in excellent condition, with the brass cylinder retaining all of its lacquer and in good working order.

A substantial instrument it weighs over 3.8kg in its case which measures 13" x 9.75" overall. Please see my other auctions.
