The lid has been carved with a beautiful grand madallion in the centre complete with a peacock! There are beautiful detailings forming a border near the edge of the lid with even more charming little peacocks. We then open the lid and take a look at the wonderful scales and accessories.
I should add that the locking mechanism still works too. Inside there are two scales - a large one and a smaller one. The brass plates have been hallmarked with the maker's name, which reads either "Hassan" or "Hossein". There are eight different weights - there are spaces for ten weights, so two of them must have gotten lost over the years. There is also a steel file, along with two long rods which screw into each other, as well as a pair of tongs. The inside of the wooden box has been beautifully hand painted with gold floral motifs all over. This is a stunning piece of history, with wonderful detail and beautifully preserved over the years. An extremely rare and very collectible set! The length of the wooden box is 34cm = 13.4 inches. The width of the box is 22cm = 8.7 inches. The height of the box is 11.5cm = 4.5 inches. The scale set is in good condition.
A couple of the small weights are missing as mentioned above. Some wear and tarnishing to the brass and steel components of the scales and accessories. The wooden has some cracks but is sturdy and strong.
