Kymograph C. F. Palmer vintage collectible physiology recording apparatus
An electric kymograph/recording drum made by the renowned maker of apparatus for research and teaching in physiology and pharmacology C. This may be one of their later models, perhaps dating from the 1950s. These are now rare and collectible items. Early models were driven by belt and pulleys. This one is in surprisingly good condition with excellent original C. The gearbox has 3 ranges of speeds plus a neutral position which allows the drum to turn freely without drive. Construction is nearly all brass and aluminium and it is heavy. The height is 21 (540 mm). The 6 diameter drum appears to be aluminium with a surface that might be copper or brass. It has the brass mounting attachment for a light weight recording lever that recorded muscle contractions induced by nerve stimulation on glossy paper wrapped round the drum and coated with a layer of carbon soot, before the advent of electronic chart recorders.

An electric nerve stimulator would produce pulses when triggered by the switch operated by the turning drum (see photographs). Both the Science Museum London and the Oxford Museum of the History of Science have examples of Palmer kymographs. Cash on collection only from Oxford.
