I Have Listed For Your perusal a Wonderful Late 19th Century Antique Howell James (Royal Warranted). Gilt & Enamel Equine Travel Desk Barometer with it original Travel case c1860. As you can see via all the photos listed this Halstaff & Hannaford, London retailed Howell James travel barometer is in all round excellent condition. The style of this desk piece can only be described as equine.
The barometer is housed within a Royal Blue velvet lined draw which is to the rear of its stand, the Barometer it is framed within a stylised horseshoe which constructed from gold wash ormolu with the added detail of 7 lucky beautifully enamelled blue nail heads. The barometer is held in place with the help of an elaborately engineered easel which fits in place on a platform on top of its leather box.
I have done a little research and all indications are that these travel barometers are quite rare to find because l could not find another one to compare it with and possibly even more so in this condition. The box and platform footprint measures approx 5" / 12cm Square and with Barometer fully mounted is approx 5.5" / 14cm high. Updated listing: Since listing this item I have found out about who actually designed and made it prior to it being retailed at Halstaff & Hannaford's on Regent Street, London. It was actually designed and made by the Royal Warranted firm Howell James, London 1860.They were actually made so that either a barometer, clock or thermometer were interchangeable.
