Francis Barker & Son large mahogany compass circa 1890

This large Victorian compass measuring 6" square by 1½" deep. Was made by Francis Barker & Son, and has their Trade Mark London logo arranged in a triangle with very small intertwined letters reading FBS, just above the fleuer de lys North symbol.

The 5 steel needle pivots on a gemstone bearing above an attractive paper dial that's in very clean condition and has two outer scales, one divided into four 90 degree quadrants and the other 360 degrees. The lid is fastened with two elegant brass clasps, which also activate the transit lock holding the needle in place when shut. Weighing just under 500 grams and dating to around 1890, this mahogany cased compass is in very good condition and in working order.
