Complete set of drawing instruments in shagreen case by R. Bakewell, circa 1800
A very fine and complete set of shagreen-cased antique drawing instruments signed R. The case interior is lined in red velvet, the exterior fitted with brass molding and name plate. Complete with 12 instruments including signed bone sector and scale rule, ebony and brass parallel rule, engraved brass protractor, inking pen, bow compass, and large and small dividers with original attachments (dotting wheel, inking tip, and lead holder). A fine and original brass-mounted pencil is also included. The large dividers, pen, bow compass and inking tip all have hand cut butterfly thumbscrews for fine adjustments. Richard Bakewell (active 1797 to 1826) traded at Loveday Street, Birmingham. Similar sets by Bakewell can be found in the Oxford Museum of the History of Science and the London Science Museum.
