This item is a rare original circa 1900 Albert Ott Company Current or Flow Meter made in Germany. Used for measuring the speed of a stream, river or other body of water.
Generally considered a civil engineering instrument it is used to determine say; the volume of water when building a dam etc. Both the fore mentioned companies were founded in 1873 in Germany. The Ott cased meter here having serial #1556 was made around 1895 according to the company numbering. It is solid bronze with a nickel plating and is in very fine condition.Ott was probably the top instrument maker in Germany at the time and is still in business today. And the quality of this meter is very obvious by looking at it!
The case is 9 5/8 inches long by 4 3/8 inches deep. A string would have been run through the eyelets on the brackets to allow the graduated wheels to engage and start recording while timing it. I was told that these were sometimes used as speed meters in small vessels. It is complete as is but the user could order a separate pointed 3/4 inch diameter shaft for mounting it on. Or frequently they would use a sharpened stick to do the job.
Best quality for the time period and quite difficult to find complete and intact today.
