Circa 1893 Heller & Brightly Transit Coxe Mining Family Drifton PA
This is a very nice Heller & Brightly Transit (serial number 6552) that was made circa 1893. This is a substantial full size transit.
Many surveying instrument collectors consider Heller & Brightly to be one of the top instruments makers in the 4th quarter of the 19th century. You will likely feel the same way after you play with this transit for a few minutes.
According to Heller & Brightly sales records, Coxe Brothers Mining Company in Drifton PA was the original purchaser of this transit. The Coxe Family was a pretty big player in mining, and the Coxe family had a vey interesting history. Everything works on this transit, and everything I have for the transit is included in the pics. Issues worth noting - one of the level vials is cracked and doesn't hold liquid, a sunshade for one of the verniers is missing, and the a vertical crosshsair appears to be missing.
