C. 19th Large Ross Zentmayer brass microscope (1885)

Offered for sale is a heavy, large, compound, monocular microscope by Ross, London. Ross-Zentmayer pattern, horseshoe shaped base, stamped Ross London, 5356, twin supports, and stage. The serial number places it in 1885. The supra structure consists of a brass support column, with a course focus rack system, controlled by 2 milled wheels, and a rear mounted graduated wheel for fine focus. The main body racks to a maximum height of 60 cm, and closed to 43 cm.

The name of the model defines a set of microscopes characterized by allowing an oblique illumination of the item to be analyzed. This type of design was widespread in the US from 1870 and this one in particular is surely the most famous. Contained in a, probably not original, mahogany case, in very good condition with a working lock and key.

It comes with two original Ross objectives (1in and 1/5in) in their original brass cannisters, as well as two empty ones. Rotating mechanical stage with X-Y movement (X manual and Y by pinion) and substage with diaphragma iris, condenser and filter holder with micrometric adjustment.
