C1895 Cased Bacteriological Microscope by Swift of London. A very fine quality cased Bacteriological Microscope by Swift & Son, of London. The microscope is in very nice condition and comes with a swivel fitting for 2 objectives. The objectives are both by J. Swift & Son and one is 1 inch and the other 1/8 inch focal length.
The latter probably requires immersion. The microscope stands on an a'Crouch' foot with a U-shape in the rear forming the third toe of a tripod. It is signed on the bottom of the rear of the foot SWIFT & SON, 81 TOTTENHAM Ct Rd, LONDON. The foot and limb have an oxidized brass finish.
Course focus is by vertical rack and spiral pinion, with 2 wheels, apparently invented by Swift. The fine focus is made by micrometer screw long lever, with a horizontal adjustment wheel. The wheel can be tensioned by another smaller wheel underneath the first. The substage mirror is planar and concave and is on a gimbal. This microscope is equipped with a Traviss mechanical'Roller Stage'. This easily attached accessory was invented in 1894 by Will R.
Traviss, a Swift employee who became foreman. There are 2 wheels that allow fine movement of the specimen slide laterally and longitudinally. Traviss also invented the expanding stop for dark ground illumination, fitted underneath. It has a closing iris to alter the amount of light coming through.
The microscope is in very nice condition, with a the lacquered gilding intact. This model was probably better described in Carpenters, The Microscope and its Revelations of 1883: The instrument constructed under this designation by Messrs.Swift, is one of which it may be fairly said that it is surpassed by no other of its price in the excellence of its workmanship, and its suitability to the general wants of the Microscopist. The fitted case is made of mahogany wood, with inner slots for different extras. There are slide holders and a small drawer for holding objectives. There is a brass carrying handle but the door lock is missing its key. Size: 29.5 x 19 x 14.5 cm (11½ x 7½ x 5¾ inches) Weight: 3.7kg.
