An original antique c1890 late Victorian period PHILIPS PLANISPHERE or Star Map Navigator' SHOWING THE PRINCIPAL STARS VISIBLE FOR EVERY HOUR IN THE YEAR'. It was Made In Germany for George Philip & Son Ltd , Geographical And Educational Depot, 32 Fleet Street, London.
Liverpool: 45 to 51 South Castle Street and has a maximum width of 12.25 in (310 mm). The circular section excluding pointers has a diameter of approximately 10 in (255 mm). An explanation of its use can be clearly read to the reverse (some foxing, not a problem).
The Planisphere is made from strong card and the central leather covered textured section with embossed gilt lettering, numerals and ornate decoration can be easily rotated by means of the four ordinal pointers. One of the pointers has a purpose made small hole with brass insert for hanging or other fixing purposes. It is in very good condition overall with only very minor expected surface wear commensurate with age and use. A scarce, decorative and practical Scientific antique which would make a useful addition to someones collection, display etc..
