C1870 Cased Large Refracting Telescope Newton & Co Cappo Belfast

C1870 Cased Large Refracting Telescope Newton & Co Cappo Belfast. A fantastic c1870 large brass Refracting Achromatic Telescope in very good condition. The telescope is marked Joseph Cappo of Belfast, but is in a wooden case that has the label of Newton & Co.

We assume that the telescope was made by Newton & Co. (one of the oldest producers of telescopes) and retailed by Joseph Cappo. Either way, quality of construction is superb. The telescope is balanced on a vertical brass column, which has a telescopic strut to give rigidity and precision to the viewing. The telescope has a choice of tripods; a small desk tripod (which appears too basic to be of much use to such a large telescope) and a large and heavy tripod which has a heavy brass platform on three long wooden legs. The tripod is numbered 326. The refracting achromatic telescope was invented and patented by John Dollond in 1758. Joseph Cappo appears as a Barometer, Thermometer, Chemical and Philosophical Instrument maker in the Ulster Address lists around the 1860s (168 Millfield Rd). On the other hand, Newton & Co.

Are also registered, at that time, as Opticians, Mathematical, Philosophical & Astronomical Instrument makers based in Fleet Street, Temple Bar, London. Given the size of the telescope it may have been built as an astronomical device. The telescope has a few small knocks, but they do not detract in any way from the beauty of the piece.

The case is made of mahogany. The inside has slots to hold the components in place, except for the tripod. There are also a couple of extra eyepieces for viewing bright objects such as the sun. Dimensions telescope: 9.5 x 150.5 cm Dimensions tripod: 148 cm Height horizontal telescope on tripod: 186 cm Lens diameter: 72 mm Size case: 26 x 15 x 118 cm Weight: 19.2kg.
