Dating to the last quarter of the 19th century, this is a rare brass floating dial pocket compass by Francis Barker. The dial bears the markings. , arranged in a triangle below the North fleur de lis, contained within is a combination of 3 letters and one symbol. These are superimposed over each other to form the logo of Francis Barker & Son. The S in this instance is reversed, indicating this was made after the death of Francis Barker in 1875.

Housed in a brass case with some minor dings on the base, it includes a separate push fit lid measuring 68mm in overall diameter, and stands 40mm high with the lid on. The distinctive compass card pivots on a gemstone bearing finding North easily, on the underside are etched the letters'E I', see photo. Possibly the initials of a previous owner. This is clearly a quality instrument weighing just under 170 grams and made by one of the more prominent makers of the day.
