This is an antique gyroscope made from solid brass. It is on a long ferrous stem with a slightly finer tapered end which would have fit into something larger.
It is the sort that would have been for educational use - demonstrating possibly in a school or college etc for gravitational science studies. Or just a gentleman's study desk top item. It has the thumb screw threaded part to allow you to stop and hold in place the revolving top part which has the inner weighted wheel which spins the other way on the axis.
No maker's marks or metal marks etc. In collectable condition with normal signs of age and use wear. No damage to the metalware.
Please see pictures for more details. 8 inches long and 5 inches wide. A very nice large example which I would say was from about 1860 or so. Remember this is NOT a toy, it is an antique scientific instrument of large size. In the title or description it means. Condition which may have scuffs, scratches and damage.
