Antique Victorian Brass Microscope & Lenses Prize R. Field & Son Student School

Fine example of a mid 19th Century brass microscope in a fitted wooden case, complete with lenses and accessories. Very similar in design to R. Field's Society of Arts Prize Microscope, circa 1858. The microscope is made of lacquered brass and sits on a black metal Y-shaped base.

It tilts, has a rack and pinion main focus and additional fine focus on the rear of the arm. It is similar in design to a Bar-Limb microscope and the top part of the tube unscrews to pack away into the box.

It has a square stage with a manually adjustable slide rest. The microscope also comes with a set of stage forceps, a live box, and some filter lenses. Below the stage is a mirror and a revolving wheel to control the level of light.

The microscope is labelled on the back of the base with the makers name. The microscope comes with three objective lenses and two brass lens cases.

The first case is marled 3/4 & 1 1/2 and comes with a two part lens. The second case and lens are both unmarked and the final lens is also unmarked but all are very good quality.

The microscope appears to be in good working order and I have set it up and tested it with a few old slides. I'm sure the lenses would probably benefit from a clean but they produce a clear and bright image all the same and the microscope was easy to focus.

It comes in its beautiful original wooden case with a drawer to hold the tube, lenses and accessories. The box is good quality with a brass ring carrying handle and it comes with its original working key.

The microscope measures approximately 13 tall. The box is a compact 9 1/2" high X 6 1/4" wide X 5 1/2 deep. The microscope is in very good condition for its age. It has been used and will have normal signs of wear so please don't expect it to be like new.

There are some small knocks and light scratches on the base and some tarnishing on the brass. There are some general signs of wear and age on the box and the hinges have been replaced but it is sturdy and has a lovely aged patina.

The microscope has been cleaned and lightly polished and it displays beautifully. The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions at all please ask.
