Antique Victorian Barometer Nautical Maritime Ship Marine Boat Instrument
Large Victorian Marine Aneroid Barometer featuring a deep Porcelain dial with a circular scale ranging from 26 to 31 inches of barometric pressure. The outer circumference is elegantly adorned with lavish black and red script detailing standard weather indications and the inscription "Aneroid Barometer" at the base, all surrounded by intricate scrolling designs. The centre of the dial boasts a beautifully detailed pattern. The internal pointer features a half-moon shape on one end and a slim arrow on the other, which moves as expected when tested in an air pressure-filled clear bag. The external brass set hand, operated through the thick bevelled glass front, features a turning screw knob that is in working condition. The bevelled clear glass front is in good antique condition. The rope twist wood carving around this barometer is exceptional and rare. Wall hanging brass hook on the back. Brass Label attached to the Base of the Barometer stating the following when presenting to the winner of the Trial Eights on the 4. This rowing club Trial Eights 4th June 1889 won by. Boat racing in the Victorian era, the Trial Eights sees evenly matched crews race against each other over The Championship Course, these races form a key part of the Boat Race Season and this event that continues today. Wooden Base 23cm in diameter.
The brass surround is secured to the oak wooden back with small tacks/screws. One of these tacks is intact, keeping the barometer secured to the wood. The head of the second tack appears to have worn off, and from what i can get to see I'm unsure if a third tack was ever fitted in the third hole on the brass surround. One end of this brass label has become loose from its tack nail, causing the label to become slightly out of shape. Been stored in loft for many years, as is uncleaned unpolished, commensurate & age use marks, scuffs.
