An antique surveyors level by T B Winter and Sons of Grey Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, engraved to the side'T B Winter, 21 Grey Street, Newcastle on Tyne' and with a makers label on the inside of the mahogany fitted case. Also attached to the inside of the case is a brass plaque for the Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Company Ltd of Darlington, a company that was founded in 1877 and later became one of the UK's foremost bridge builders. In the UK, the company built the King Edward VII Bridge across the River Tyne, linking Newcastle and Gateshead (fourth image, stock photo), and also the famous Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge. It also found success overseas, being commissioned in 1905 to build the Victoria Falls Bridge. The company continues to operate as a world leader in bridge construction and design.
The instrument stands 14cm high and is 30cm long. It is complete with glare shield, two eyepieces and original fitted case.
