ANTIQUE SEXTANT c1900 JAMES MORTON SUNDERLAND & S. SHIELDS

A fine antique 7 inch (18cm) radius 3 Circle Frame Sextant polished and lacquered signed'James Morton Sunderland & S. The silverscaled graduated arc reads from -5 to 155 degrees with an index arm, hinged shade/magnifying lens and vernier to 10 seconds.

3 Horizon round shades (2 red & 1 green) and 4 rectangular Index shades (3 red & 1 green). A long 7.5 inch telescope with optical grid markings, short 3.5 inch telescope, 3 inch pin hole sighting tube plus adjusting screw pin. A small handheld magnifier is included for reading scales.

Fitted mahogany carrying case (28 x 25 x 12cm) with lock (key missing). I believe this instrument is technically described as a'Quintant' or fifth of a circle as the arc is 72 degrees. James Morton Ltd is thought to have traded from around 1878 to the mid 1900's. The dated trade label photograph is from online research (for illustration purposes only) showing James Morton Ltd being a member of the'British Nautical Instrument Trade Association 1918'.

Would make a good display, presentation piece or gift. Condition: In good overall condition. The top of the mahogany box has been sympathetically replaced probably due to splitting with age. The index mirror, horizon glass and shades are in good condition as well as all the telescope optics.
