For sale is a rare and fine set of electrostatic discharge tongs. Would date them to the mid-19th century, but they could be earlier.
They have a nicely shaped glass handle with a knop where the handle joins the lacquered brass hinge. The hinge is fitted with two arms terminating in the discharge spheres. Maximum length is 36.5 cms.
The tongs are in good antique condition, with almost all of the original brass lacquer present and showing signs of age typical for such an instrument. These interesting examples would have been used in conjunction with a Ramsden, Nairne or Wimshurst type electrostatic generating machine as a hand held method of safely discharging a statically charged object.
