This is a wonderful barograph by SHORT & MASON, LONDON who were a highly renowned instrument makers. The case is made from mahogany and is an extremely ornate case having. Columns to the four corners. It has lovely deep bevelled glass to all four sides and the top. The movement is 8 day which is a good quality balance wheel movement and is complete with it's winding key which is integral with the movement.

The base plate of the barograph movement is signed'SHORT & MASON LONDON'. Compass & nautical Instrument Makers. In addition, Short and Mason were founded in 1845 by Thomas Short and James Mason at 40, Hatton Garden, London and produced precision measuring instruments including barometers, anemometers and compasses. They became leaders in the field of barograph design.

The firm among many other famous names supplied the scientific instruments for the ill fated Scott and Shackleton Polar expeditions. They continued to trade until 1969 when the company was merged with the Taylor instrument company (Europe). LTD' is the mark for the Army and Navy Co-operative society, Francis Street, Westminster, London. The barograph takes barometric measurements which in turn are recorded on a paper record sheet which is mounted on a clockwork revolving cylinder, the ink nib draws a line on the chart as the pressure rises and falls. The cylinder makes one full revolution in one week.

The movement is stamped'Pat 3715.02'. The barograph is in full working order. Although not part of the sale, the barograph comes complete with spare charts and ink.

DIMENSIONS: The approximate MAXIMUM dimensions are: 15 inches (38 cm) long x 9 1/4 inches (23.5 cm) deep x 9 1/2 inches (24 cm) high. As you can see from these dimensions the barometer is of fantastic proportions. CONDITION: The barograph is in excellent condition and is in full working order.

The case is also in excellent condition as can be seen in the photographs. The glass is in good condition just a couple of scratches to the top glass which can be seen in the photographs. For collection in person, cash on collection. Unless prior arrangements have been made all items to be collected within 14 days.
