A fine antique lacquered brass compound microscope by Henry Crouch of London. It is complete with three objectives - two of which are signed Crouch - and two occulars, and presented within original mahogany case with dovetailed joints. The brass retains its original lacquer, which survives in excellent condition. The foot is engraved with the maker's name and serial number 9691, dating this instrument to the late 1890s. The same number is embossed into the mahogany case.
Henry Crouch began his career as an apprentice to Smith, Beck & Beck, leaving at the age of 22 to establish his own business in 1862, and initially operating from premises at 66 Barbican, London and later opening an additional branch at 141 Oxford Street. His firm quickly earned a strong reputation for the fine quality of its instruments, and established a strong customer base on both sides of the Atlantic.
