Antique'Jones' Folding Botanical Microscope. A good example of a small'Jones' type folding botanical microscope in its original case. The microscope is made of lacquered brass and folds compactly. It has two removable lenses which allows for three levels of magnification. It's long brass arm has a sprung piece of brass below which allows for the holder to be moved backwards and forwards, focussing the specimen.
There is a large metal spike in the brass holder which the specimen to be viewed. (usually a flower or small insect). It can be moved up and down and tightened in place in the holder. Originally many of these microscopes had forceps as well as a spike but this does now only come with a spike. The microscope measures approximately 3 1/2 (9cm) from the bottom of the handle to top of the lens when folded out.The arm is 2 3/4 (7cm) long. The microscope comes in its original small wooden case lined in green velvet and silk.
The outer case is covered with a black leather-type material which has worn on the base and around the edges. The lining has also frayed and worn in places. The case has two small brass latches to keep it shut and overall is strong and sturdy and displays well. The case measures a compact 3" (8cm) long x 1 1/4" (3cm) wide x 3/4 (2cm) high. The microscope is in good condition for its age.It has been well used and has normal signs of wear and age. The brass has tarnished over time and the handle has discoloured slightly with age. There are some small knocks and light marks around the piece but nothing detrimental. The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions at all please ask.
