Antique Ernst Leitz Wetzlar Brass Microscope Fine Condition c1925, Cased
This listing is for a beautifully presented antique monocular microscope by Ernst Leitz Wetzlar bearing serial number 240465 dating the instrument to 1925 and it also carries some markings indicating that it was previously owned by Edinburgh University - Medical School, Surgery Dept. This Leitz model presents with a very nice heavy brass foot and upper limb in black painted finish together with a good brass-work details with lacquer that's in excellent age-appropriate condition. It's got that look of a bygone age when scientific instruments really looked the part: it could even hold its own as an item of steam-punk interest given its brass-work and numerous thumb-wheel adjustment mechanisms.

The brass to the whole instrument has a lovely mellow patina giving it a warm yellow-golden glow when it catches the light. It's a solid heavy well-made instrument, perfect for both display and technical use as intended.

If you've read this far, you will probably be interested in these antique brass instruments, so please read on for a fuller description. The main coarse focus is via rack and pinion, which has a nice smooth action.

Fine focus is achieved by a vernier screw/cam mechanism which has also a smooth action. The upper frame also tilts and can be tightened via a lever to hold in position for inclined viewing. With the optics, this antique brass microscope comes with a chromed eyepiece draw-tube with graduation marks and is supplied with three appropriate quality vintage Leitz eyepieces: - No. 1 - 5x magnification - No.

3 - 8x magnification - No. 4 - 10x magnification Plus it's got three vintage brass objective lenses by Leitz on a period triple turret. The objectives all have their correct brass canisters and are as follows. 4 - approx 20x magnification - No. 6 - approx 40x magnification.

2mm oil immersion - approx 100x magnification. Overall, the range of magnification available therefore ranges from about 100x to around 1,000x when using oil immersion techniques. The instrument's circular stage is brass with an anodised top layer, it can be rotated through a full 360 degrees, with jut the right amount of resistance to the touch and there's also a thumb-screw adjuster for centering. The stage surface is unmarked and is currently fitted with a correct Leitz brass mechanical over-stage with single brass thumb-screw for tightening into position and horizontal x/y adjusters which are perfect for both holding and moving slides around especially under inclined viewing. The over-stage also has its own fitted storage case and to put away in the case, the x-axis adjuster thumb-wheel on the left hand side is taken off, thereby allowing the over-stage to fit snugly in its velvet-lined case. Turning to the sub-stage, we currently have a Leitz condenser fitted into the brass plug-in mounting, which in turn sits within a condenser carrier on a rack and pinion mounting, giving both height adjustment and swing-out capabilities. There's also a working iris on a separate mount with a horizontal rack and pinion centering mechanism. Lighting is via a plano-concave mirror with good silvering on both sides showing no age-related foxing - the mirror is on a height-adjustable mount that also has swing adjustment. This Leitz instrument is essentially an excellent and really well made piece of intricate early 20th century optical engineering and is a sturdy mid-size period microscope in original antique condition, with bags of character and period charm, presenting amazingly well. Please note that there is also an original hardwood storage case correct for this example with matching numbers. It's fitted with a brass carry-handle, internal lens/eyepiece racks, sundries holder and the fitted case for the Leitz mechanical over-stage.

There's also a working lock that's got its original key and there's also an original card on the inside of the door with the London retailer's details and a description of the lenses supplied with the instrument back in 1925. In summary, this is a superb visual example of a well-equipped antique brass Leitz stand in highly original condition and is essentially a very collectable instrument well suited to both display and technical use.

It will fill the display function amazingly well, really complementing a home office, study or similar display setting especially when set up with an appropriate antique slide. Thanks for looking - please also check out my other listings if you get a chance.
