Antique Drawing Instruments In Silver-Mounted Shagreen Case By Bate, London

A large set of architects drawings instruments in a fine silver-mounted shagreen etui by Robert Brettel Bate dating to circa 1800. Features 11 instruments including brass and ivory parallel rule, ivory protractor and brass and ivory sector engraved Bate, Poultry, London. Small and large dividers with attachments for inking and pencil lines, a finely turned pen with removable pricker, a brass mounted pencil, and a steel file/knife.

Brass instruments feature butterfly thumbscrews typical of the 18th century. Shagreen etui is mounted with silver molding, a silver cartouche on the lid, and silver hinge and clasp.

Interior of the lid is lined in red velvet. Shagreen is in very good condition. Robert Brettel Bate (1782 1847) was the son of a prosperous Stourbridge merchant and banker. He first established a workshop in London at 17 Poultry around 1807, followed by 20-21 Poultry in 1824.

In 1818 he was appointed Optician in Ordinary to King George IV. Bate specialized in hydrometers but made a wide range of other instruments including microscopes, telescopes, drawing instruments, sundials, barometers and sextants which may be seen in many museums.
