A fine antique lacquered brass compound microscope by the London maker, William Watson & Sons, this being the company's popular'Edinburgh' Student model mounted on the H stand. Fitted with coarse and fine focusing, twin objective turret, mechanical stage and substage condenser, the microscope comes complete within original fitted mahogany case and owners handbook.

The stand is engraved "W Watson and Sons Ltd, 313 High Holborn, London" and a separate cross member is engraved "H Edin Studt". The microscope dates to around 1920 and has a working height of around 43cm. Watson and Sons were opticians and camera makers, founded by William Watson in 1837. In later years, the company was run by William's sons, Charles and Henry. Watson and Sons incorporated in 1908, becoming Watson and Sons Ltd. The company earned a strong reputation for the fine quality of its instruments, eventually comprising not only microscopes but also fine cameras, lenses, magic lanterns and surveyors instruments.
