ANTIQUE BULLS EYE LENS ILLUMINATOR/CONDENSER on LACQUERED BRASS STAND

This beautiful and high quality illuminator is probably English (although it is unmarked) and was made in the late 19. It is an accessory for a microscope and was used to channel light onto a specimen being viewed. Made from lacquered brass with a beautiful "bulls eye" lens (the term for a powerful convex lens used for condensing light to a focus) it is height and angle adjustable. The lacquer has mellowed into a beautiful golden colour and the unlacquered brass has lovely patina; it now makes a beautiful decorative object. Overall, it is in good original condition.

The rod holding the lens is loose in its sleeve and so it needs balancing into position. Being hand blown, the lens has some imperfections including some tiny trapped air bubbles and is very lightly scratched. The lacquer has been scratched in numerous places and there is a spot of white paint on the knurled adjuster - please look very closely at the pictures as they form part of the description.
