A fabulous antique set of brass portable apothecary beam scales by De Grave, Short & Co Ltd. This portable balance comes complete with its original mahogany case which acts as the base/stand for the scales during use. The scale is beautifully constructed from a solid brass two part upright which raises the brass balance trays from the surface.
It is attached to a brass shoe incorporated onto the lid and is easily constructed and dismantled and packed away neatly inside the mahogany case drawer. The beam arm is attached by means of a pin to the head of the upright and is clearly stamped "Class B" - "to 3oz" across the arm. The set comes complete with the original matching weights in various denominations which are stored inside their original card case. The mahogany case is beautifully crafted with a single drawer to the front with a brass handle, it is nicely labelled to the top - De Grave, Short & Co, Makers, 102 Naylor Road London. The prestigious makers of this set are perhaps one of the earliest and most recognisable of all scale makers. This company boasts a long history trading in London from 1767. Following the death of Charles De Grave in 1799 the company was thereafter run by his wife Mary De grave who maintained control until 1844 as De Grave & Son. She was succeeded by her son Charles in 1845 who renewed the name to De Grave, Short & Co haven taken on a partner Samuel Robinson Short. This title was short lives as in the latter stages of 1845 the firm became De Grave, Short and Fanner having taken on another partner. A superb quality, beautifully constructed item that has stood the test of time. The whole set is in superb condition for its age with a few minor scuffs and marks. Signs of use and wear to the scale pans, chains and arm rope as expected.
