Aluminium compass azimuth with jewelled suspension, divided to 360 degrees with principal stations at 10 degree intervals. The base with female-threaded ferule.Original condition, serviced and working, finding North easily. Compass lock engages, prism is clear, glass in flags sound. Traces of original oxidised finish to outer case. These prismatic compasses, invented by Capt Henry Kater c1814, are described in detail in Stanley's Surveying & Levelling Instruments of 1890.
