Victorian ornate Oak cased Admiral Fitzroy Barometer. Stunningly beautiful piece, a lovely example of this very sought after barometer. The Oak case has nicely detailed carvings to the outside and inside beneath the glass, it has been lightly and sympathetically cleaned and beeswax polished to bring out the colour and protect the wood. Measures 114cm tall by 23cm wide by 9cm deep. The Oak case houses several scientific instruments including a mercury barometer, a Camphor storm glass and a thermometer, the thermometer is unusual in that it contains orange liquid.
The Camphor storm glass is empty due to the contents deteriorating over time, but is clean and is accessible via a cork so it is refillable should you wish to do so, the barometer has mercury present but I couldnt say if it is the complete amount to make it fully operational. The lettering and artwork is stunning and highly detailed in its red and black, which is also unusual, it is very of its period in Style. There are 2 controllable needles which run on a fully a operational and smooth rack and pinion system, both control knobs are present. This is a really lovely decorative unusual piece that displays beautifully and would be both a focal and talking point in any home. The barometer is presented in fantastic Antique condition showing wear commensurate with age and use, there is a small area on the very top of the case behind the pediment showing some small splits to the wood on the curved section, but it is stable and is not very noticeable, just mentioned for accuracy, please see the photos. In addition to his naval career, Fitzroy did pioneer work in the field of meteorology. The Beagle's instrumentation for the Darwin Expedition included several chronometers as well as barometers, which Fitzroy used for weather forecasting. The Darwin Expedition also was the first voyage under sailing orders that the Beaufort wind scale be used for wind observations. This barometer is strictly collection only due to its fragile nature, it needs to be transported in an upright position due to the mercury. We will not deal with third party couriers, collection by purchaser only.
