A lucky second chance to acquire a superb antique pocket barograph, circa 1900. Made in France by Richard Frères (stamped accordingly). A scarce little thing, this model having a propensity for altitude (7000ft) and thus, given its age (which largely predates the aeroplane), not unreasonable to suggest this it is a balloonist's barograph.

Straight from the intrepid and brave-hearted age of exploration. Serial number 772, suggesting a good early model. Presented in its original wooden box, complete with a supply of the super thin paper charts, which this machine punctuates upon its rotating drum once every 30 seconds with an ink dot. Cosmetically a little disappointing, the paper cover having worn away from the machine casing, but a robust carcas underneath it all, begging to be re-clad.

An affordable, simple enough job. The wooden box is battle scarred and charcaterful for it. A good key-wound platform movement within the drum, in working order. Diaphragm responds to changes in air pressure when tested in a sealed bag, as evidenced by movement in the needle.

Stylus zeroing key shaft seemingly bent and the paper release lever is not original, though functioning. Doubtless the movement would benefit from a service, but with the diaphragm in tact and the clockwork movement ticking sweetly, the essentials are there for someone to work with. Supplied with orginal key and a little pot containing a nib.

A fine piece of meteorological equipment, possibly up in the sky even before the Wright brothers. Please do have a quick look at my terms and conditions at the very bottom of the page.
