A good 3 draw brass telescope with the rarely signed engraved signature of'J. Ramsden, London'; (there are very few of Ramsdens instruments that include the initial'J'). Additionally engraved around the back collar,'Capt Geo Groves, 28th Regt, Infry'. Captain George Groves was with the 28th Regiment of Foot (North Gloucestershire Regiment) and is mentioned in the War Office Book,'A list of the Officers of the Army and Marines', 1st June 1798. On the 5th March 1801 it was proclaimed in the London Gazette,'Captain G. He served during the Napoleonic Wars when, under Major General John Moore, the 28th entered Egypt and took part in the Battle of Alexandria and Battle of Abukir (March 1801). The 28th was present at The Siege of Cairo (June 1801).

The telescope measures 9.5? Long (23 cms) when closed and 28.5? (72 cms) fully drawn with an O.

Lens of 4 cms diameter. It is free of dents though the eye piece has a small ding to it. The inner objective lens has a small mark to the outside edge visible on picture 4 (at 6 o'clock) but does not affect the excellent image viewed through this telescope.
