This rare seven draw mariners pocket telescope dating to the mid 19th century is signed'W. Devonport - To adjust by sliding in the second draw', and is likely to be William Heath who traded at 46 and 116 Fore Street, Devonport, from 1850 until his death in 1896.
Closed, it extends to an impressive 26. Fully drawn, including the rayshade which interestingly doubles as the grip over the main barrel when retracted. In good condition throughout, with the covering still firmly attached and a firm draw action on the dent free brass tubes, it also has its original brass end cap. The image is very clear and sharp through the 35mm diameter objective lens, focusing easily to approximately 15x magnification. A compact yet powerful telescope, with a swivel dust slide in the eyepiece cup, these pocket models would have been popular with mariners arriving and departing the port town.
Weighing just under 550 grams it's not only still practical to use, but a fine example of a type that really does not come along very often. Please study the photos as they are part of the description, and I will be happy to answer any questions if I can.
