Vintage 1877 Short & Mason War Dept Broad Arrow Military Green Dial Compass & Case This particular compass was made by the famous British compass maker Short and Mason. The case has the date 1887 on its front and to the rear serial number 2370 and a War Department stamp and Broad Arrow.
The compass case is made from black lacquered brass, while the 2½ inch green compass card dial is typical of the early models of prismatic compass made by Short and Mason. It is in excellent working condition, there is some tarnishing to the case, I have not tried to polish or clean it though I do believe a gentle polish would work wonders The leather matching field case is also marked with the serial number 2370 and a War Department stamp and Broad Arrow. It is in excellent condition though the strap has broken but can easily be restuck. It measures approx 7.5cm diameter by 10.5cm long by 2.2cm deep In 1845 Short and Mason was established by Thomas Short and James Mason in London. The business was located at 40 Hatton Garden, London, and produced precision measuring instruments including barometers, anemometers, and compasses.
They became leaders in the field of barograph design. Please view photos carefully as they form part of the description Please view my other listings.
