Vintage Leitz Wetzlar HM-LUX Binocular Microscope with Upgraded LED Illuminator
Here we have an excellent example of a vintage Leitz Wetzlar binocular laboratory microscope in grey painted finish to the frame together with some black and metallic details. This example is serial number 804671 and it dates from around the 1970s. The condition is really good and suggests relatively few owners and only light use over the last 40+ years.

Turning to the main technical details of this quality vintage microscope, we have. Binocular eyepiece unit which can swivel through a full 360 degrees and is supplied with two sets of eyepieces: 10x Leitz Wetzlar which are the originals for this example and a second set of lower power eyepieces with 8x magnification by C. The eyepiece separation is adjustable and both eyepieces can be independently focused. The main focus is by a rack and pinion system which moves the stage vertically, with controls at the base of the frame. There is a smooth action through the twin thumb-wheels - travel and focus are both good.

Note that the frame is not designed to tilt. Fine focus adjustment essentially works within the main focus adjustment when smaller inputs are made via the focus thumb-wheel and also appears to have a nice smooth action.

There are four quality objective lenses with a usable selection of progressive magnification and a rotating 4-way turret which clicks into place positively as each objective is rotated: Low Power Meiji Flat Field - 4x Nikon MPlan - 5x Gillet & Sibert - 10x Vickers - 40x (effective magnification therefore ranges from around 32x to 400x). The mechanical over-stage is a superb design with twin thumb-wheel x-axis and y-axis controls located on a drop-down adjustment mechanism below the stage, plus an adjustable slide holder that's a real joy to use and ideal for holding slides in place during active viewing sessions. The mechanical over-stage can be removed very easily for cleaning simply by undoing two thumbscrews - a really neat feature. Sample illumination is provided via an electric illuminator located within a tube below the main stage. It's been upgraded to LED and is fitted with a 6v LED bulb which produces a cool white light and is powered by a switched transformer that plugs straight into a 240V wall socket. The illuminator column also contains an opaque lens therefore providing diffuse sample illumination - see close-up photo in the listing of an antique slide being viewed. The overall condition of this quality microscope is excellent and there are only very minor signs of wear to the paint finish in areas where one would expect to see some signs of use for a vintage piece of technical equipment. Please note that there is no storage case with this microscope.

In summary, this is a superb vintage technical microscope from well-known makers Leitz Wetzlar of Germany and may well appeal to collectors and hobbyists alike. It's supplied with a comprehensive range of objective lenses and is fitted with a superb mechanical over-stage which is a must for high-magnification applications. This microscope will be very well packaged for transport and will be dispatched by insured courier upon receipt of cleared funds.
