(A zoetrope is a device that produces the illusion of motion from a rapid succession of static pictures, for further information see the Wikipedia article). In my estimation it dates from around the mid 19th Century, circa 1870's, but please make up your own mind about this.
No trademarks on it that I can see. This has been well played with and we have not cleaned it. It measures 14.5 inches tall (37cm) and the metal part is 12 inches across (30cm) and it weighs 2.9kg.In 2 parts there is a turned hardwood (beechwood) stand, with a spigot. The tinned black circular zoetrope fits onto this spigot to spin, the tin is a bit tatty but it hasn't been repainted and it works when you spin it and view the'moving' images through the slits in the sides. The turned beechwood base is in good condition with no splits. There are 23 viewing cards, these are all tatty and dirty - 10 of them have minimal damage, 13 are more tatty and some have sellotaped repairs to the backs which have browned with age - all are useable - well played with, but they appear to be early enough, some have numbers on and names of the cards.
