Unusual 19th c American Surveying Instrument, Solar Compass, Good Condition

Unusual 19th c American Surveying Instrument, Solar Compass, Good Condition. Signed on the compass face, Otto K. Miller, this is an early form of Wm. From Michigan in the 1840s. This instrument appears to have seen little if any field-use, which suggests it may have been for classroom demonstration purposes.

Evidence suggests there used to be two sight vanes mounted under the limb. This unusual instrument probably dates from the third quarter 19th century and may have evolved from the Cincinnati Ohio region of makers. Certainly a research opportunity, and a very interesting and rare instrument.
