Quality Mahogany Barograph by Short and Mason. This is a lovely Mahogany cased barometer by Short and Mason with the mechanism of grained and lacquered brass construction with a first quality 8 day duration drum recorder with compensated balance on platform escapement bearing Pat. 3715.02 and the serial number 5021.
It is mounted on a conventional base of conical form with static gear bearing the same serial number. It has a captive winding key and top cover. The mechanism is set on a conventional chassis bearing a manufacturers plate "Short and Mason , London" with fluted border and raised on four turned pillars and having a seven capsule set with adjustment wheel over , grained white metal recorder arm with tension adjustment.The base mounted arrester bar set between stop pins. The recording range is 28 -31 inches of mercury. It retains the original ink bottle and dipper maintained in a tubular flanged holder. The whole contained within its original well executed polished mahogany case which had faded to a mellow orange colour with an excellent polish and finish.
The base with a double chart door and several paper charts. The cover of heavy bevelled five glass design reflecting the period of neo classical design Please see Banfield Edwin - Barometers , Aneroid and Barographs p118 fig 104 for an image and description of a very similar item. As can be seen from the images this is very handsome instrument and being made from mahogany with a decorative case it would suggest it was made for a domestic rather than industrial setting. The original gilding is present.It is 15 inches wide , 9 inches tall and 9 inches deep. The overall condition is excellent and original but like all items over 100 years there are the odd marks , the only one worth mentioning is a tiny flick of wood missing off the edge of the rear corner (illustrated).
