A fine example of Louis Casellas altazimuth compass clinometer. Signed on the clinometer dial, L Casella. Maker to the Admiralty and Ordnance. This is an early version, numbered 174, the front telescope having two draws. With the instrument laid on its side, the compass dial is free to rotate when the small round button to the top is pushed forward.The dial can be locked in place by pushing the brass button located just under the eye piece. Focussing is adjusted by push / pull to the draw tubes and eye piece. The clinometer dial can be locked into the desired position be depressing the larger button to the top.
