FLEAGLASS 18th Century NATURALISTS MAGNIFIER
A nice example of a late 18thC. It has a nice turned handle of bone, and a bar with a central slot projects from the hinge; the specimen holder (forceps and spike) runs in the slot (this can be tightened with the knurled screw clamp).

The twin lenses (undamaged) are mounted in a brass ring that is fixed on a hinged arm. Although unsigned, it can be attributed to W & S Jones, announced in 1798 and popular for most of the 19. The instrument measures just over 3 ¼ inches by 2 ¼ inches when open. The original box is of stiff board covered in (embossed with a fleur de lys) maroon paper.
